Jackson becomes 4th Hog picked in 2007 NFL Draft

Arkansas defensive tackle Keith Jackson Jr. was selected in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams the second day of the National Football League Draft on Sunday. Jackson was the 38th pick of the seventh round and the 248th pick overall. The Little Rock, Ark., native was one of 19 defensive tackles taken in the two-day draft.

Jackson became the second member his family to be taken in the NFL Draft. His father Keith Jackson Sr. was selected with the 13th pick of the 1988 draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He went on to a Pro Bowl career with the Eagles and the Green Bay Packers.

Jackson Jr. ranked fourth on the Razorbacks in tackles last season with 79 stops, including 7.5 tackles for loss (-32) and 2.5 sacks (-25). He also snared two interceptions on the season including returning one for 69 yards and a touchdown against Southeast Missouri. He was a first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection as chosen by The Associated Press and was the national defensive player of the week for his performance against Auburn.

Jackson joined first-day Razorback draftees defensive end Jamaal Anderson (1st round – 8th pick) and cornerback Chris Houston (2nd round – 41st pick) who went to the Atlanta Falcons and offensive tackle Tony Ugoh (2nd round – 42nd pick) who was selected by the Indianapolis Colts.

Arkansas’ four picks in this year’s draft marked the most Razorbacks selected since 2004 when six players were taken. The Razorback foursome was included in a total of 41 players selected from the SEC in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Three Razorbacks picked on first day of NFL Draft

Arkansas defensive end Jamaal Anderson and cornerback Chris Houston are on their way to the Atlanta Falcons while offensive tackle Tony Ugoh is headed to the Indianapolis Colts after the first day of the National Football League Draft on Saturday.

Anderson, a Little Rock, Ark., native, was selected with the eighth pick of the first round. Houston and Ugoh heard their names called back-to-back in the second round with the 41st and 42nd selections to the Falcons and Colts, respectively.

Anderson became the 19th Razorback to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft including the fourth Arkansas player in the Houston Nutt era to be taken in the initial round. He is the first Razorback since Matt Jones (2005) to be selected in the first round and the highest pick out of Arkansas since Billy Ray Smith Jr. was taken by the San Diego Chargers with the fifth pick of the 1983 draft.

Anderson was an honorable mention All-America and a consensus All-Southeastern Conference selection last season after racking up a league-leading 13.5 sacks (-95). He also registered 19.5 tackles for loss (-108)

Houston will join Anderson in Atlanta after the Falcons chose the honorable mention All-America cornerback with their third pick of the draft. Houston was a consensus second-team All-SEC selection racked up 45 tackles and three interceptions, including returning a pick for 87 yards and a touchdown in a win over Mississippi State.

Anderson and Houston became the first Razorbacks to be drafted by Atlanta since Randy Garner in 2000 and the first Arkansas duo to go to the same team in the draft since 1990 when the Chicago Bears selected James Rouse and Anthoney Cooney.

Ugoh was taken one pick after Houston by the Colts, the team that drafted former Razorback offensive guard Brandon Burlsworth in 1999. Ugoh was a second-team All-America selection and a first-team All-SEC performer in 2006 in helping the Razorbacks to a 10-4 campaign. The Houston, Texas native cleared the way for the SEC-leading and fourth ranked rushing offense in the nation with an average of 228.5 yards per game. The Razorback offensive line also finished second in the nation in fewest sacks allowed.

All eyes were on the NFL draft Saturday as severa…

All eyes were on the NFL draft Saturday as several Arkansas Razorbacks were projected to be named during the first round of the draft.
The first Hog to be announced was Jamaal Anderson. The Atlanta Falcons selected Anderson as the No. 8 overall pick.
The Razorback was a First-Team All SEC selection collecting 65 tackles for Arkansas last season.
Anderson decided to forgo his senior season for the NFL and his choice landed him in the Top 10 during the draft.
He was in Little Rock awaiting the announcement surrounded by many excited family and friends.
"There's so many mixed emotions. I was confident enough when I came out to say I'm a first rounder. I never expected top 10 at first," said Anderson. "I'm just very blessed to be in this situation. It's something that I'm going to cherish for the rest of my life. I'm going to make the most of this opportunity."
Cornerback Chris Houston has to wait until the second round to hear his name but at least he will have one familiar face joining him. Houston was picked ninth in the second round by the Falcons. That was the same team that selected Anderson in round one.
Offensive linemen Tony Ugoh followed right behind Houston as the 10th pick in the second. Ugoh went to the defending Super Bowl champions, the Indianapolis Colts.
Keith Jackson and Sam Olajubutu are expected to be picked in the forth or fifth rounds on Sunday.

Lawsuit Supboenas

Will Houston Nutt be required to testify in a lawsuit against University of Arkansas President B. Alan Sugg and school Chancellor John White?

The attorney who filed that suit on behalf of a Montgomery County man said he intends to take depositions from Nutt and Teresa Prewett, a Little Rock woman who sent an obscene and highly critical email to former Razorback quarterback Mitch Mustian.

Eddie Christian, Jr., said his client wants to know the truth behind the sending of the email and whether or not Nutt had any part in it.

Prewett had described herself as a close friend of the Nutt family.

In his lawsuit John David Terry questions a decision by White to have Nutt investigated in the matter since he was friends with Prewett.

Some have called Terry a disgruntled fan who is out to discredit Nutt. His attorney said Terry is simply trying to find answers to some questions about the investigation that do not add up.

"John White wrote Miss Campbell, Mitch Mustain's mother, a letter saying that based upon his review he found that there was no post-personal relationship between Coach Nutt and Mrs. Prewett,” said Christian, Jr. “That's in direct contradiction to her own statements. So disgruntled fan? I don't see that. He’s a fan that wants to know the truth. I think that would be a more accurate depiction of Mr. Terry."

Christian went on to say that he has subpoenaed Nutt, Prewett and both parties computer harddrives. He will ask for a forensic examination of those harddrives.

Both Nutt and Prewett have made public statements about the matter. Mustain and his mother have not commented.

View 2007 Football Schedule

For the 12th-consecutive season, Arkansas and LSU will meet in the “Battle of the Golden Boot” on the Friday (Nov. 23) following Thanksgiving in a game televised by CBS Sports.

The Tigers will host the Hogs in the regular season finale for both squads at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. The game is slated to kickoff at 1:30 p.m. CT. In five of the past six seasons, one of the two schools has gone on to represent the western division in the Southeastern Conference Football Championship Game.

The Golden Boot, a nearly 200-pound 24-karat gold statue in the shape of the states of Arkansas and Louisiana, was introduced to the series in 1996. For the past 11 seasons, the winner of the Arkansas-LSU game has taken home the traveling trophy.

The Arkansas-LSU matchup is the first game on the Razorbacks’ 2007 schedule that has been officially slated for television. No further television arrangements involving the Razorbacks have been made at this time. Networks may wait until 12 days prior to a game to select that contest for telecast.

The Boston Bombers

The Boston Bombers explode against bitter rivals.

The Boston Red Sox made an early-season statement over the weekend to their arch-rival New York Yankees in sweeping a three-game set with a 7-to-6 win Sunday night.

It's the first time the Yanks have been swept at Fenway Park since 1990. The Red Sox tied a major league mark by hitting four straight home runs. Manny Ramirez, J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek all connected in the bottom of the third inning against New York
Yankees starter Chase Wright.

Lowell then connected on a three-run shot in the seventh as the Red Sox improved to 12-and-5 in the early going. The Yanks are 8-and-9.

Is this early proof that the Yankees are not as good as season's past? Or are the Red Sox just that lucky?

Former Ole Miss coach Evans joins the Arkansas basketball staff

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.(AP) -- Rob Evans, a former head coach at Mississippi and Arizona State, has joined the Arkansas basketball staff as an assistant to John Pelphrey, hired this month from South Alabama.

Evans, with 38 years of college experience, was fired from Arizona State last year after an 11-17 season. The 60-year-old coach had a 119-120 record while coaching the Sun Devils from 1999-2006. His final team led the Pac-10 in 3-point shooting (.378) and lost four games by four points or less, with another loss in overtime.

At Ole Miss from 1993-1998, Evans led the school to consecutive SEC Western Division titles and NCAA Tournament bids. He took over a program that had had just one winning season in the previous nine seasons and only one NCAA Tournament bid in its history.

In 1997, he was named SEC Coach of the Year. In 1998, the Rebels beat Kentucky in Lexington for the first time since 1927.

Six of his 14 teams as head coach earned post-season tournament bids.

The Hobbs, N.M., native served as an assistant to Eddie Sutton at Oklahoma State in 1991 and 1992 after spending 15 years as an assistant at Texas Tech and seven at New Mexico State, his alma mater.

Evans also played baseball and football and was drafted out of high school by the Colt 45s, which eventually became the Houston Astros.

Following college, he signed as a free agent with the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association and with the Oakland Raiders as a receiver.

Nutt addresses web rumors with open letter

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Arkansas football coach Houston Nutt said in an open letter Tuesday that Razorback fans who obtained records regarding his school-issued cell phone and suggested he had an improper relationship with a woman were spreading "unfounded gossip" that had hurt his wife.

Cell-phone records obtained by fans and media under Arkansas' Freedom of Information Act showed that Nutt exchanged text messages with the cell phone of a female television news anchor more than 1,000 times over a six-week period, including once just 19 minutes before the start of the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1.

Nutt said his correspondence was appropriate communication with a friend and colleague, some of it about her work for a nonprofit organization with which he is involved. "Any allegation or suggestion that our professional and personal friendship or involvement goes beyond that is false, careless, and purposefully vindictive," Nutt wrote.

The material obtained has not indicated what any of the text messages said. The coach, under fire after the departures of a popular assistant coach and freshman quarterback Mitch Mustain, said he would have released the texts but that the phone company had informed his lawyer they were not available.

Other information obtained under the FOI law reportedly noted contact among Houston Nutt, his brother and running backs coach Danny Nutt and family friend Teresa Prewett on the day Mustain received a harsh e-mail. The head coach gave Prewett an official reprimand and barred her from the sidelines during games after the letter was traced to her.

"Once again, for the record, I had no prior knowledge of that e-mail and promptly reprimanded Ms. Prewett when I learned of the correspondence," Nutt wrote Tuesday. "I have respect for Mitch Mustain and wish him the very best in the future."

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported Tuesday that Mustain was among those who requested Nutt's telephone records, along with those of Danny Nutt and athletic director Frank Broyles.

Nutt's letter was delivered by e-mail by Arkansas sports information director Kevin Trainor.
