Now that the Arkansas Basketball team has started its real schedule and is finished with the puff cakes in the first part of the season, I guess it is time for me to start covering the games. The Hogs went in to last night's game against #4 Oklahoma hoping to prove they could win against one of the big ranked national teams despite the youth of the team.
Arkansas proved they were definitely capable of defeating a good team by giving the Sooners their first loss of the year with a 96-88 win. Arkansas fans should get excited to see glimpse of how good Razorback basketball could be again. This was only one game, but it can hopefully give this young team a boost of confidence to continue believing they can beat any team.
The Razorbacks received a huge helping hand from an unexpected source this soon from former Razorback football player, Marcus Monk. Monk has only been with the team for a few weeks. Monk had already used up his eligibility in football and had one semester of eligibility left in basketball. After trying out the NFL, Marcus decided to give basketball another try.
"Marcus Monk -- my goodness," Arkansas coach John Pelphrey said. "There's no words that can describe what we saw tonight. That was one of the best performances that I've ever seen."
Monk scored 12 points and 6 rebounds in relief for Michael Washington, who was in foul trouble, and helped slow down Oklahoma's Blake Griffin.
"I've still got a long way to go and a lot to learn," said Monk, who also played a bit of basketball for Arkansas in 2004-05. "But I'm trying to soak it all in."
Courtney Fortson had another great game and continued to confirm that he is going to be a great point guard for this team. A position that Arkansas has needed to get a great player for a long time. Fortson was one of two Razorbacks with a double-double for the evening by scoring 12 points with 10 assists. Michael Washington was the other and had 24 points and 11 rebounds.
"I thought Fortson was sensational the way he controlled the game," Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel said. "He understands pace. He understands who's going."
The Razorbacks led by as much 25 points in the second half. The Sooners were able to make it a close game by going on a 16-0 run and later pulling to within 4 points at 81-77. Arkansas preceded to handle Oklahoma's push with good free throw play to pull out the win, 96-88.
Hopefully, Arkansas can continue the winning and show this game was not a fluke with a win this Saturday over North Texas in North Little Rock. If the Hogs can win the North Texas game, the Razorbacks should get ranked in the Top 25.
The Razorbacks will then get their next big game against the #8 ranked Texas Longhorns in Bud Walton Arena.
